Bob Dylan may be wishing that he went to his Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday, because Patti Smith performed in his place, and it was a little rocky.
She was singing Dylan’s song “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”, and to her credit, the lyrics ARE a little tricky. There are 550 words, and a lot of the lines begin with a repetitive cadence…which led to this moment.
She repeated a line in the second verse, and then when she realized she was off, she wasn’t able to regroup without stopping. Patti paused, and calmly asked the orchestra to start over again.
“I apologize. I’m sorry, I’m so nervous.” was the only words Smith could utter in that moment.
The crowd had her back, and applauded. She also stumbled in the third verse after singing the wrong lyric, but that time she was able to push through.
